Sales of 'waterfalls' help fight multiple sclerosis
BY SCOTT DONNELLY

Jason Cox | The Leader - Jacqueline Giasi drills a piece of agate for a table-top fountain Friday at her store, Waterfalls of the Fingerlakes.
WATKINS GLEN | Jacqueline Giasi knows well the healthy benefits of having a waterfall in her home.

"I have (multiple sclerosis), and it's part of my life," she said.

So are the waterfalls.

Giasi opened Waterfalls of the Fingerlakes, 20 North Franklin St., about two years ago. Since that time, she's been selling in-home waterfalls to others who understand their perks - from relaxation and aromatherapy to very tangible environmental perks.

"Besides the relaxation factor, they have an extremely calming effect. I add essential oils to some of the fountains, and that provides aromatherapy as well. It's like a natural humidifier in the home," she said.

The store's main merchandise is waterfalls and fountains, many made from geodes imported from Brazil. Geodes are spherical geographic phenomena that contain various crystal formations.

Many of the fountains include crystal spheres that swirl on the current of water flowing from the top of the fountain. Other fountains include lighting effects or misting machines that give the impression of a waterfall in the fog.

There are models ranging from $110 to $6,000 for wall-sized waterfalls, Giasi said. Many of the models can be personalized to include company logos or special designs unique to each customer. In fact, as a promotional offer, area businesses that order customized waterfalls can get the customization at cost, Giasi said. Shipping and handling is also included in the purchase price, she said.

Giasi's waterfalls have another health benefit most consumers will never see. In addition to making quarterly donations from the store, Giasi donates 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of her fountains to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Waterfalls of the Fingerlakes goes beyond waterfalls to include many other gift items, including musical clocks, candles, candle holders, aroma therapy lamps, geode wind chimes, waterfall art and home decorations. Those wishing to make their own waterfalls can also buy the pumps, mist machines and other supplies at the store.

In addition to the Franklin Street store, Waterfalls of the Fingerlakes does business through its Web site at www.art-fountains.com. The store is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays.
